an innovative urban concept: The Senior Collegium + Toolkit for builders
The Philanthropic Association Realdania chose futu to provide insights and design principles on how to increase life quality through rethinking urban shared living for tomorrow’s seniors. futu designed a brand new shared seniorhome concept, called The Senior Collegium using co-creation methods combined with research on future trends and shared living spaces across the world.
Together with Realdania, the Social Housing Organization fsb, architects and an enthusiastic group of urban seniors , futu designed a shared home concept redefining the traditional shared seniorhome. The Senior Collegium integrates principles from student living and international megatrends concerning collaborative cultures. The Senior Collegium motivates a very open and inclusive community as it prioritise shared spaces and maximum synergy between residents, neighbours and visitors – across generations.

The Architect responsible for the building program
private, semi-private, semi-public and public zones
Functions and activities in the Senior Collegium are mapped into four zones. The zones guides the architects and the final design of the building, as they define user needs for space related to privacy and social interaction. The framework separates user needs into private, semi-private, semi-public and public zones.
Loneliness is a massive social problem affecting 104,000 elderly people in DK. By 2040 every fourth Dane will be +60 years. Loneliness is a potential risk for elderly people but shared homes provides a social structure to counteract this.
91% residents in shared seniorhomes report that they experience increased quality of life, while 75% experience better social conditions.

futu delivered a Value Program providing an innnovative concept for an urban Senior Collegium in Copenhagen. futu also delivered a Toolkit for builders providing inspiration, co-creation guidelines and design principles motivating the establishment of Senior Collegiums on a national scale.
